Island Retreat

Fearon Hay’s award winning Island Retreat, where three concrete structures sit amongst native bush overlooking Matiatia Bay.

Set amongst native bush on Waiheke Island, Island Retreat is formed by a series of concrete structures arranged around a central outdoor space. From its elevated setting, the home opens towards Matiatia Bay and the Hauraki Gulf while remaining private and secluded.

Our approach focused on the relationship between the architecture and its setting. Working with the late afternoon light, we captured the concrete forms as they shifted in tone and texture, while allowing the surrounding landscape and expansive views across the Hauraki Gulf to remain an important part of the imagery.
